Ceramics For All

We have been collaborating with the Disability Resource Centre, a supportive day centre for adults, to design and deliver a tailored programme of ceramics workshops. The focus of these sessions has been to explore and develop accessible techniques that allow participants with diverse abilities to engage meaningfully with ceramic arts.

When developing this programme, we paid close attention to how we can adapt traditional ceramic processes to ensure they are both accessible and enjoyable for everyone. This involves considering a wide range of factors, including physical accessibility, sensory engagement, and varying levels of dexterity. We’ve integrated different techniques, such as slab building, hand-pressing, and textural manipulation, which don’t require fine motor skills but still allow for creative expression.

Moreover, we’ve focused on the use of tools and materials that are intuitive, ensuring they cater to a variety of needs and preferences. For example, lightweight tools, larger clay slabs, and non-slip mats are incorporated to provide stability and comfort, making the process more inclusive. Our approach isn’t just about simplifying the art form, but about finding ways to make the medium engaging and accessible in a way that respects and fosters the creative potential of each individual.

The programme continues to evolve as we gather feedback and insights from the participants, ensuring that it remains flexible and adaptive to their needs. We believe this approach not only promotes inclusivity but also highlights the therapeutic and empowering benefits of creative expression through ceramics for individuals of all abilities.
