Janus Heads
We had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the Art Boss Group and Renfrewshire Youth Services on a truly unique project—a collection of clay portrait busts. Working in pairs, the participants set to work on creating imaginative, two-faced “Janus Heads,” where each person sculpted one side of the face. This collaborative approach not only encouraged teamwork but also allowed for some wonderfully monstrous, playful results.
The busts were crafted using well-grogged clay, which helped create a sturdy and textured surface ideal for the detailed sculpting required for the faces. Once the busts were formed, we applied layers of red iron oxide underneath a variety of glazes to give them a striking, layered finish. This technique resulted in beautiful, rich colors and a dramatic effect, making each Janus Head a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
The project was a fantastic way for the participants to experiment with both traditional sculpting methods and creative glazing techniques, while also exploring themes of duality and identity through their art. The end collection was a fascinating display of their skills, imagination, and the power of collaborative creativity!
